Video chat vs text chat: which one is right for you?
When you talk to a stranger online, the choice between camera and keyboard changes everything. Video feels like meeting someone. Text feels like passing notes. Neither one is the better choice overall, but one is probably better for you right now.
Otrigal offers both, and this guide is true for any site.
The short comparison
| Video chat | Text chat | |
|---|---|---|
| How it feels | Immediate and personal | Calm and at your own pace |
| What you need | A camera, a microphone, and a quiet place | Just a keyboard |
| What the other person sees | Your face, your voice and your room | Only what you type |
| Mobile data | A lot | Very little |
| Weak network | Can freeze or drop | Usually fine |
| Thinking time | None, you reply at once | As long as you like |
| Knowing who is real | Easier, you can see them | Harder, it could be a script |
| Language practice | Speaking and listening | Reading and writing |
Choose video when
- You want a real sense of the person. Faces and tone carry far more than words do. A joke that falls flat in text often works out loud.
- You want to practice speaking. If you are learning English or any other language, nothing replaces talking.
- You are tired of typing. A ten-minute chat can be easier than a hundred messages.
- You want to know it is a person. It is harder to fake a live conversation than a text one, though not impossible.
Before you start, check your light and what is behind you. Our first video chat guide walks you through it. Then try video chat on Otrigal.
Choose text when
- You are around other people. In a hostel, on a bus or at work, typing is the only private choice.
- You are nervous. You get time to think, and nobody can see you blush. Plenty of people start here and move to video later.
- You are on a weak network or low on data. Text works almost everywhere.
- You do not look your best and do not care to. No light to fix, no room to tidy.
- Your thoughts come out better in writing. For some people, they just do.

How safety differs
The risks are different, more than one being "safer".
On video, you are giving away more. Your face, your room and your voice can all be recorded by the other person, without you knowing. Treat your camera as public, and do not show anything you would not want saved.
On text, you give away less, but it is harder to tell who you are talking to. Scripts and scammers often work through text, and people can be bolder when no one can see them. Watch for fast flattery, links, and any mention of money.
Whichever you pick, you can skip, report and block on Otrigal. For the full picture, read is random video chat safe? and our guide on spotting bots and scams.
Our suggestion
If you have never done this before, start with text for a few chats. Get a feel for how conversations go and how easy it is to skip. When you feel ready, try video with good light and earphones in. You will know quickly which one you prefer, and you can always switch back.

Is text chat safer than video chat?
