Uhmegle alternative: what changed and what to try next
If you went looking for Uhmegle recently, you may have noticed something odd. When we read its homepage on 6 November 2026, it spoke about itself in the past tense: it "let you chat with strangers", and it told visitors they can now use Umingle instead. The main button says "Start chatting on Umingle".
So the honest answer to "what is a good Uhmegle alternative?" starts there. This page explains your options, including Otrigal, a free video and text chat for adults 18 and over. The Otrigal team wrote this page, and Otrigal is not connected to Uhmegle or Umingle. We do not know the reason for the change, or how the two sites are related beyond what the Uhmegle homepage says.
What Uhmegle offered
According to its homepage, Uhmegle offered random video and text chat with these main ideas:
- Interest matching. You add topics, and it tries to pair you with people who list the same ones.
- No account needed. It describes itself as instant and anonymous.
- Moderation. It describes a mix of automated systems and human moderators.
- Browser only. It works on phones, tablets and computers with no app.
If those are the things you liked, keep them in mind as you look at other sites.
Your options now
| Option | Why you might pick it | Keep in mind |
|---|---|---|
| Umingle | It is where Uhmegle's homepage sends you, and it also has interest matching and text and video chat | Its safety page describes age checks, including third-party ID checks for people flagged as possibly under 18 |
| Joingy | No sign-up, keyword interests, text or video | Its rules ask you to keep chats in English where you can |
| Emerald Chat | Strong interest matching, plus friends and group channels | Filters such as gender are on paid tiers |
| Otrigal | Video and text in your browser, and free Premium through invites or college verification | You must sign in first, and interests do not choose who you meet |

How Otrigal differs from what you are used to
Two things will feel different if you come from Uhmegle, so we would rather tell you up front.
You sign in first. Otrigal needs a free account with Google, Facebook or email. That is one more step, but it makes it harder for someone who was banned to come straight back. Read how reports and bans work for the details.
Interests work differently. You can pick up to 5, and shared ones can show on screen to give you something to talk about. They do not decide who you are matched with. Here is how matching works.
What stays the same: one person at a time, a choice of video or text, and nothing to install.
Watch out for copycat sites
When a known site changes, lookalike sites appear, often with very similar names. Some are harmless, and some are not. Before you use a chat site you have just found:
- Check the rules page exists. A real service tells you what is not allowed and how to report.
- Look for a clear age rule. A site for adults should say so.
- Do not download anything you did not expect. A website asking you to install a file to start chatting is a warning sign.
- Do not enter card details to "verify" your age or your account on a site you do not know.
