Random video chat in India: a practical guide

By the Otrigal team · Updated 6 November 2026 · 5 min read

Using it on your phone

You do not need a laptop. Open Otrigal's video chat in Chrome on Android or Safari on iPhone, sign in, and allow your camera and microphone when your browser asks.

• Hold your phone at eye level. Propping it on books beats looking up from your lap.
• Face a light. A window or tube light in front of you is better than one behind you.
• Use earphones. They stop echo, and they keep your conversation from filling the room.

If the camera will not start, our camera fix guide takes you through it step by step.

Mobile data and weak networks

Video calls use far more data than text. If you are watching a daily data limit, use Wi-Fi when you can, and check how much a few minutes costs you in your phone's data settings before settling in for a long session.

On a weak network, the picture will freeze before the sound does. Moving closer to a window often helps. If a call keeps dropping, read how to fix connection problems. If data is tight or your signal is poor, random text chat uses very little and works on almost any connection.

When to chat

You are matched with people online at the same moment, so timing shapes who you meet. Evenings usually bring more people online, so matches come faster. If you hope to talk to people in other countries, think about their clock too:

• Late night in India is afternoon or evening in Europe.
• Early morning in India is evening in the United States.
• Afternoon in India is late evening in Australia.

Speaking Hindi and other languages

The Otrigal site is in English, but you can talk in any language you and the other person share. A quick "Hindi or English?" at the start solves it. If you meet someone who speaks neither, keep it simple, or skip and try the next person. There is no shame in that.

Many people use random chat specifically to get better at spoken English, because it gives you real practice without a classroom. We wrote a whole guide on how to practice English with strangers.

Hostels, PGs and shared homes

• Check what the camera can see. A hostel name on a notice, a college ID on the desk, or a street view from your window can give away more than you think.
• Consider the other people in the room. They did not agree to be on camera, so point yours away from them.
• Try text if you have no privacy. Text chat is easier when others are around.

College students can also verify their college for a month of Premium, free.

Scams to watch for

Anyone who moves quickly from chat to money is a warning sign, in India and everywhere. Watch for these:

• A request for UPI, OTP or bank details. Never share them. No real person needs them.
• A move to WhatsApp or Telegram within minutes. It takes you away from the site's report tools.
• Blackmail after a video call. If someone threatens to share a recording, stop replying, do not pay, keep the messages, and report it. In India, you can report at the National Cyber Crime portal, cybercrime.gov.in, or call the 1930 helpline.
