Random text chat: talk to new people without a camera
Not everyone wants to be on camera. A random text chat connects you with one new person and lets you talk by typing, at your own pace. On Otrigal it is free, it runs in your browser, and it is for adults 18 and over.
Why choose text chat
- No camera, no microphone. The other person sees only what you type.
- Time to think. Good for shy starts and for practicing a new language.
- Works almost anywhere. A quiet library, a shared room, or a slow connection.
- Low pressure. It is easy to start, and easy to leave.
How it works
- Create a free account with Google, Facebook or your email.
- Open text chat.
- You are matched with one person who is online.
- Type, skip, or report. You can leave at any time.

Who uses random text chat
People choose text for very different reasons. Some are shy, and want to get used to talking with strangers before they try a camera. Some are in a shared room, a hostel or on a bus, where a video call is not an option. Others are learning a language and like having time to read a message twice and think about the reply. If that is you, read how to practice English with strangers.
Plenty of people simply find that their thoughts come out better in writing. A text chat can go surprisingly deep, because nobody is watching your face while you think about what to say.
One-on-one, not a chat room
Otrigal's text chat is between two people. There is no room to join, no list of usernames to scroll, and no crowd reading along. Your message goes to one person, and you have their full attention. When it ends, you move on to someone new.
If you would rather have a group conversation, a chat room may suit you better. Our Y99 alternative page explains the difference between the two.
Tips for a better text chat
- Start with a friendly line and a question: "Hi! What are you up to today?"
- Keep messages short, so the other person can answer easily.
- Ask about them, then share something about you.
- Do not wait for a perfect message. Just reply.
- If the chat goes quiet, change the topic or skip.

Stay safe
Text is still a chat with a stranger. Keep your full name, address, school, workplace and phone number private. Do not send money, and do not click links. If someone makes you uncomfortable, skip and report them. See the safety guide.
Text comes with one extra risk: it is harder to tell who you are talking to. Replies that ignore what you said, instant flattery, and links are all warning signs. Read how to spot bots and scams.
