Camera not working on video chat? Fix it step by step
In most cases, this is a permission problem and takes under a minute to fix. Your browser needs your approval to use the camera, and if you tapped "Block" once, even by accident, it remembers. Work through the steps below in order. They apply to Otrigal and to most other browser video chats.
Try these first
- Reload the page and choose "Allow" when your browser asks.
- Open the site in a real browser. If you tapped a link inside Instagram, TikTok, Facebook or another app, you may be in that app's built-in browser, which often cannot use your camera. Open the link in Chrome or Safari instead. This is one of the most common causes on phones.
- Close other apps using the camera, like Zoom, WhatsApp, Meet or your camera app, and other browser tabs on a video call.
- Update your browser, then restart it.
Allow the camera and microphone in your browser
Menu names can differ slightly by version, but the steps are close to these:
| Device | What to do |
|---|---|
| Chrome on Android | Tap the icon to the left of the web address, then Permissions. Turn on Camera and Microphone, then reload. |
| Safari on iPhone | Tap the page menu beside the web address, then Website Settings. Set Camera and Microphone to Allow, then reload. You can also check under Settings, then Safari. |
| Chrome or Edge on a computer | Click the icon to the left of the web address. Set Camera and Microphone to Allow, then reload. |
| Safari on a Mac | Open Safari, then Settings, then Websites. Under Camera and Microphone, set the site to Allow. |
| Firefox | Click the icon to the left of the web address and remove the block on the camera and microphone, then reload and allow them. |
If your browser is allowed, check your device
Your phone or computer can block the browser itself.
- Windows: Settings, then Privacy and security, then Camera. Turn on camera access, and access for desktop apps. Do the same under Microphone.
- Mac: System Settings, then Privacy and Security, then Camera. Turn on your browser. Do the same under Microphone.
- Android: Settings, then Apps, then your browser, then Permissions. Allow Camera and Microphone.
- iPhone: Settings, then find your browser's app settings. Allow Camera and Microphone.
What the error message means
| Otrigal says | What it means | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| Camera Access Denied | Your browser or device is blocking it | Follow the permission steps above |
| No Camera Found | Your device cannot see a camera | Plug in a webcam, check the cable, or try another USB port |
| Camera In Use | Another app or tab has it | Close the other app or tab, then try again |
| Hardware Issue | Something else went wrong | Reload, restart your browser, or try a different browser |
Black screen, wrong camera or no sound
- Black picture: check for a physical cover on your laptop's camera, or a privacy key on the keyboard. Then restart your browser.
- They cannot hear you: check that you are not muted in the chat, and that your browser is using the right microphone.
- You cannot hear them: check your volume and your earphones. If your phone is linked to a Bluetooth speaker, sound may be going there.
- Video is frozen or keeps dropping: that is probably your connection, not your camera. See how to fix connection problems.
About the camera check on Otrigal
Otrigal uses automated checks to help keep chats within the rules. Keep your face in the frame, in decent light. Dark rooms and bright light behind you make it harder for the check to see you. If your face leaves the frame during a chat, you may see a reminder to keep it in view.
Still stuck? Write to support and tell us your device and browser. Or use text chat in the meantime, which does not need a camera at all. You can also read how to get ready for your first video chat.
