Video chat not connecting? How to fix connection problems
When a video chat gets stuck, freezes or keeps dropping, the cause is usually your network and not the site. Video needs a steady connection in both directions, so it can also be the other person's network. If it only happens now and then, just skip and try the next chat. If it happens every time, work through this guide.
How the connection works
Otrigal's video chat tries to connect your browser directly to the other person's. That is usually the fastest route. Some networks do not allow direct connections, so it may then go through a relay server, which can take a little longer to set up. This is why the same site can work fine at home and struggle at college or at work.
Try these first
- Try the next chat. The problem may be at the other person's end. If it works now, you are fine.
- Reload the page. This fixes more than you would expect.
- Switch networks. Move from Wi-Fi to mobile data, or from data to Wi-Fi. If one works and the other does not, you have found the problem.
- Turn off your VPN or proxy. These commonly interfere with video calls.
- Close anything heavy. Downloads, other video calls, and streaming on the same network all compete for bandwidth.
- Update or switch your browser. Try Chrome, Safari or Edge in their newest versions.
Fixes by symptom
| What you see | Likely cause | What to try |
|---|---|---|
| Stuck searching for a long time | Few people online right now | Wait, or come back in the evening. If you set "Match with" to one gender, try Everyone |
| Matched, but no video appears | A network is blocking the connection | Skip, then switch networks and turn off any VPN |
| Picture freezes, sound carries on | Weak or slow connection | Move closer to your router, or to a window on mobile data |
| Chat drops after a minute | An unstable network | Stop other downloads, or switch networks |
| Fails only at college or work | That network blocks video calls | Use mobile data, or try text chat |
| Everything is slow | An old device or too many open tabs | Close other tabs, then restart the browser |
Getting a better connection
- Get closer to your Wi-Fi router, since walls and floors weaken the signal.
- On a computer, use a cable if you can.
- On mobile data, find a stronger signal. A spot near a window often does more than you would think.
- Keep your phone charged. Battery saver modes can slow down video.
- Use earphones. They do not speed up your connection, but they remove echo, which makes a weak call easier to follow.
College, hostel and office networks
Shared networks often limit or block video calling, and they can get very busy in the evening. There is usually nothing you can change on your side, so mobile data is often the simplest fix. Do not try to get around rules on a network you have agreed to follow, such as at your workplace. If your network blocks video, random text chat usually still works.

If nothing works
If your problem is the camera rather than the connection, read how to fix your camera and microphone. If you are still stuck, write to support with your device, your browser, what network you are on, and what you see on screen. It helps us find the cause much faster.

Frequently asked questions
Why is my video chat stuck on connecting?
Your network, or the other person's, may be blocking or slowing the connection. Skip, switch from Wi-Fi to mobile data or the reverse, and turn off any VPN.
Why does video chat not work on my college Wi-Fi?
Many shared networks limit video calls. Try mobile data, or use text chat instead.
Can a VPN stop video chat from working?
Yes. VPNs and proxies can interfere with video calls. If you have trouble, try turning yours off.
Why does the picture freeze but the sound keeps going?
Video needs far more bandwidth than sound, so it suffers first when your connection is weak.
How do I reach support?
Use the support page and choose the camera, mic or connection topic. Tell us your device, browser and network.
