Random chat etiquette: 12 rules for better conversations
People say random chat is full of rude people. Some of it is. But plenty of bad chats are just two decent people who do not know how to begin. A few small habits can turn a five-second skip into a twenty-minute conversation.
None of these rules are official, apart from the ones in a site's own guidelines. They are simply what tends to work. Here are twelve for adults, on Otrigal or anywhere else.
Starting well
1. Say hello like a person. On video, smile and say hi. It sounds obvious, but so many people just stare at the camera. The first three seconds decide most chats.
2. Skip "asl". Asking for age, sex and location makes someone feel like a form being filled in. It often gets you skipped, and it is not safe to answer anyway.
3. Ask a real question. "What are you up to tonight?" or "What is the weather like there?" are easy to answer and lead somewhere. We have 50 more that work.
4. Be seen and heard. Face a light, and show your whole face, not your ceiling. Wear earphones if your room echoes. It takes one minute. Our first video chat guide shows you how.
During the chat
5. Listen, then follow up. The best chats come from a second question: "Why did you move there?" People love talking to someone who is actually listening.
6. Do not ask for personal details. Asking for someone's real name, number or Instagram within minutes makes people uneasy, and it is against the rules on many sites. Let them offer if they want to. On Otrigal, asking people to visit or follow something is also against the guidelines.
7. Do not comment on looks. It feels like a compliment to you. To someone who has heard it fifty times today, it can feel like a warning sign. Ask what they think, not how they look.
8. Keep the camera on your face. This is both polite and a real rule on most sites. Pointing it elsewhere is one of the quickest ways to get reported.
9. Respect a language gap. If their English is not great, slow down and be patient. Many people are here to practice, and you might be their first real conversation.
Leaving well
10. Say goodbye if you have been talking. After a real conversation, a quick "Nice talking to you, I have to go" costs nothing. After ten seconds of silence, you can just skip. Nobody expects a goodbye for that.
11. Do not take a skip personally. People skip for hundreds of reasons, like a bad signal, a knock at the door, or just a wish to find someone who speaks their language. It is not a verdict on you. The next person is seconds away.
12. Report, do not retaliate. If someone is rude, skip them. If they break the rules, report them. Insulting them back can get you reported too, and it will ruin your next chat as well. Here is how reports work.
One more thing: report honestly
The report button is there for people breaking the rules, not for people who were boring or skipped you. False reports waste moderators' time and make it harder to deal with real problems. Use it for nudity, harassment, someone who seems underage, spam, and anything that made you feel unsafe.
Try it
Next time you start a chat, try just rules 1, 3 and 5: say hi, ask a real question, and follow up on the answer. Most people are surprised how quickly their chats improve. You can try them on random video chat or text chat on Otrigal, which is free for adults 18 and over.

Frequently asked questions
Why do people skip me so quickly?
Usually it is not about you. Bad lighting, no greeting, or a dark screen are the common causes. A clear face, a smile and a real question all help.
Is it rude to skip someone?
No. Skip is part of how random chat works. After a long talk, a quick goodbye is kind, but it is never required.
What does asl mean, and should I ask it?
It means age, sex, location. It is better not to ask. It tends to end chats, and those details are best kept private.
Should I ask for someone's Instagram?
Not early on. Let the other person offer if they want to. On Otrigal, asking people to visit or follow something is against the guidelines.
What if someone is rude to me?
Skip them. If they broke the rules, report them. Do not insult them back, because that can get you reported as well.
