How matching works on Otrigal
Otrigal is a random chat, so the short answer is: when you press Start, you are paired with another person who is waiting at the same moment. This page explains the details, including what your settings do and do not change. We would rather you know how it really works, instead of imagining something cleverer than it is.
The basics
- You sign in and press Start. The first time, you fill in a short profile and confirm you are 18 or over.
- You join a queue. You wait with other people who are looking for a match right now.
- You are paired with someone. It is one person, and nobody else can join the chat.
- When you skip, you go around again. Either of you can end the chat at any time.
There is no score behind it and no one picks your match by hand. How quickly you are paired mainly depends on how many people are online. Evenings tend to be busier.
What you fill in, and why
| Setting | Required? | What it does |
|---|---|---|
| Gender | Yes | Used by the "Match with" setting. You can change it once every 30 days |
| Interests | Optional, up to 5 | If you and your match share one, it can show on screen as a conversation starter |
| Country | Optional | Your general region can show to your match |
| 18+ confirmation | Yes | Otrigal is only for adults |
Do interests choose who I meet?
No. This surprises some people, so to be clear: interests do not decide your match. They only show up when you happen to have something in common. Some other sites, like Emerald Chat and Umingle, pair people by interests. We keep matching random, so you can meet people you would never have searched for.
What "Match with" does
"Match with" lets you choose Everyone, Male, Female or Other. It is a Premium feature, and Premium is free through invites or college verification.
- It can make you wait longer, because it narrows the people you can be paired with.
- It relies on what people say about themselves. Gender is self-declared, so a filter cannot be perfect. There is a "Wrong gender" option when you report.
- If your Premium ends, the setting goes back to Everyone.
People you have blocked
If you block someone, the two of you are not paired again. It also works the other way: if someone blocks you, you will not be matched with them. You can block with or without sending a report. Read how reports and bans work to see the difference.
What your match can see
On a match, the other person can see any interests you share, as well as your gender and general region. They do not get your name, email or account details from Otrigal.
On video, they can of course also see your face and your room, and they can hear your voice. So check what is behind you, and keep personal details to yourself. Our safety guide explains why this matters, and video vs text can help you decide how much you want to share.
What Otrigal does not offer
There is no country filter, no language filter, and no way to browse people before a chat. You also cannot search for someone you talked to before. If those things matter to you, our list of sites like Omegle shows who offers what.
Frequently asked questions
Is Otrigal really random?
Yes. You are paired with someone else who is waiting. The exceptions are that blocked people are not matched with you, and Premium users can set who they match with.
Why is it taking so long to find a match?
Usually few people are online right now, or you have set a filter. Try again in the evening, or set "Match with" to Everyone.
Can I choose to talk to people from a certain country?
No. Otrigal does not have a country filter.
Can I find someone again after we skip?
No. There is no search and no friend list. If you enjoyed a chat, say so before it ends.
Can I change my gender setting?
Yes, once every 30 days.
